It’s fairly common for people to have a fear of visiting their dentist. However, not seeing your Sparks dentist regularly can cause serious implications for your oral and overall health. Because it’s so critical to maintain routine appointments with your dentist, it’s important for those with dental fears to work through them. See how your Sparks dentist can help you face your dental fears so you never have to miss a dental appointment again.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation ranges from minimal to moderate, depending on the level required to alleviate fear or pain. Some minimal sedation requires taking a pill called Halcion, a member of the same drug family as Valium. The pill is taken about an hour before the procedure and causes drowsiness. Moderate sedation is achieved by taking a larger dose of the drug. Some people may fall asleep after taking the medicine but are usually easily woken up with a gentle nudge.

Inhaled Minimal Sedation

Sedation dentistry uses various types of sedation to alleviate dental fear in patients. One form of sedation used in dental offices is inhaled minimal sedation (nitrous oxide). Most people know this type of sedation to be referred to as “laughing gas.” Patients will breathe in nitrous oxide combined with oxygen through a mask that’s placed over their nose. The gas helps you to relax while your doctor works in your mouth.  Another benefit of using inhaled minimal sedation is that your doctor can easily adjust the amount of sedation that is given, and it wears off quickly.

Our Exclusive Comfort Menu

At Embrace Dental, our goal is to provide a comfortable setting for patients so that their dental experience is always a good one. That’s why we’ve included a Comfort Menu into our practice so our patients can look forward to their dental appointment. This method is convenient for patients who have dental fear or anxiety but can’t afford ordinary oral sedation. Also, this method is a great alternative to other forms of sedation if you can’t find a driver to take you home after being given nitrous oxide. Here are the various ways Embrace Dental provides alternatives to oral sedation.

Soundproof Headphones

We offer soundproof headphones to patients that allow them to listen to music or noise-canceling sounds. Sometimes loud or frightening noises can enhance fear. But with headphones, patients are able to distract themselves from the loud noises coming from dental equipment, and are able to better relax during their appointment.

Watch a Movie

We also have movies available for patients to watch while they have their dental work done. This method also allows patients to focus their attention on the movie in front of them, instead of what’s going on in their mouth.

Tinted Sunglasses

Tinted sunglasses are used to help block out some of your major sensors, such as seeing the bright dental lights shining into your eyes. This will help ensure that you feel more at ease and will give you a better dental experience.

These alternative comfort methods work well for most patients because they allow your senses to be distracted from what’s happening in your mouth. The distraction gives you something else to focus on while your dentist works in your mouth, and allows you to relax during your appointment.
