Our talented and skilled experts at Embrace Dental can cater to all of your oral health needs by providing comprehensive dental care. In addition to the general and cosmetic dentistry we offer, we also offer restorative dentistry treatments.

Inlays and onlays both fall under the category of indirect restoration. They are both an excellent solution for repairing tooth damage that’s not quite extensive enough for a crown, but cannot be repaired with a standard filling.

What Are Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are like fillings. However, unlike traditional fillings, these restorative fillings are crafted in our office on the same day using cutting-edge CEREC technology.

The procedure for inlays and onlays are identical. The only difference between the two is that an inlay fits inside the small points of the tooth, and an onlay completely covers one or more of these points.

About the Procedure

The procedure for placing inlays and onlays is similar to the placement of a dental crown. However, when having an inlay or an onlay placed, much less of the original tooth will be removed. Dental crown placement involves major reshaping of your tooth’s natural structure, so having an inlay or onlay placed is a far more conservative treatment option.

During your first appointment, your dentist will administer a local anesthetic to effectively numb the area so the decay can be removed without causing you any pain. Existing decay needs to be removed to prevent the infection from spreading and causing more damage.

Thanks to CEREC technology, we are able to make the inlay and onlay on the same day. Inlays and onlays are made out of porcelain.

Once the inlay or onlay has been made, we will affix it to your tooth. You can be confident in the inlay or onlay, as these are sturdy and built to last for many years.
